It’s that spooky time of the year again, Halloween is quickly approaching and children everywhere are getting more and more excited to dress up and what else? Eat candy of course! A fun way to get prepared with the family for the holiday season is to bake together and I have just the perfect recipe! Get ready for the Mighty Monsters: a colorful and delicious twist on the everyday cookie.
What you will need:
For the decorations…
Red or black (or both) sting licorice
A large back of candy-coated chocolate small candies
Semisweet miniature chocolate chips
For the cookies…
1 16 oz package of ready to bake refrigerated chocolate chip cookies (makes exactly 24 cookies)- If you want something a little more healthy, try baking your own chocolate chip cookies using organic sugar such as Florida Crystals, no one will know the difference in regards to the taste.
1 ¼ cups white vanilla baking chips
Gel food coloring (your choice of colors)
1 container of white easy/ready spread frosting
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Bake the cookie dough on an ungreased cookie sheet for 12 to 16 minutes and place the sheet on a cooling rack. Be sure to let the cookies cool for at least 10 minutes.
While the cookies are baking, microwave 1 cup of the white vanilla baking chips uncovered for 45 seconds. Stir (you may need to heat for roughly 15 seconds longer to be sure that chips can be stirred smooth-all melted). Let the melted chips cool for 5 minutes, and then stir in the white frosting until the two are blended. Save 2 tablespoons (just put aside). Use the gel foo colors to add the desired colors to the frosting (split for multiple colors). Put each color of frosting into resealable food baggies, cut ½ inch off of the corner of the bag and pip on bottom of 1 cookie. Press another cookie (flat side down) on top of the frosting, placing it at an angle (cookies should touch on one side). This will give the open mouth look for the cookie monsters.
Now the fun part…decorating! Use the remaining white vanilla baking chips for teeth; simply press them into the frosting. Use frosting mixture to attach eyes and play will the licorice for hair or whiskers, use remaining decorations as desired to give your monster characters their own look.
Bring your little monsters to life with your favorite candies!!! Get creative and have fun!!!
